BREXIT BINGO

Spectre, grand wizards and Wykehamists – Your guide to out-of-touch MPs’ Brexit mumbo jumbo

Brits have been baffled by the bizarre lingo around Brexit with MPs coming up with an array of colourful jargon

BREXIT chaos has sent Britain round the bend – and MPs are no exception.

Politicians are increasingly baffling the public by speaking in an obscure code – peppering their language with dozens of arcane terms.

Brexit has thrown up a forest of jargon

Many ordinary Brits have said they can no longer follow the Brexit debate because MPs are using so much jargon.

Here The Sun explains some of the bizarre terms being deployed by out-of-touch politicians.

GRAND WIZARDS

The leaders of the pro-Brexit European Research Group, including Jacob Rees-Mogg, Steve Baker and Mark Francois.

Their “Grand Wizards” nickname is a little unfortunate – because it refers to senior members of the racist Ku Klux Klan, which terrorised black Americans in the early 20th century.

STAR CHAMBER

Another sub-group of the ERG, consisting of eight Eurosceptic lawyers assembled to give their views on Theresa May’s deal.

The gathering – including Dominic Raab and Bill Cash – is named after an English court which existed in the Tudor period.

MALTHOUSE COMPROMISE

An alternative plan for leaving the EU, designed by Housing Minister Kit Malthouse and backed by Tories from across the Brexit divide including Jacob Rees-Mogg and Nicky Morgan.

The “compromise” would see the backstop scrapped and replaced by a new mechanism to avoid a hard border in Ireland, with a longer transition period to get everything ready.

COMMON MARKET 2.0

The Brexit scheme also known as Norway Plus which would keep Britain in the single market and customs union.

This plan, pushed by Tory MP Nick Boles, is designed to replicate the original European Common Market which was replaced by the political integration of the European Union.

PIZZA CLUB

A group of pro-Brexit ministers who regularly meet in Andrea Leadsom’s office to agree a common position on our EU exit.

The “club”, said to order takeaway pizzas for their meetings, also includes figures such as Michael Gove and Gavin Williamson.

TIGGERS

The Independent Group – or “TIG” for short – comprising anti-Brexit MPs who quit Labour and the Tories last month.

The group is led by Chuka Umunna and currently includes seven ex-Labour MPs as well as three former Conservatives.

SPECTRE

A new term invented to describe Tory “arch-Remainers” who have helped grab control of Brexit from the Government.

Spectre is the name of the evil organisation dedicated to world domination in the James Bond films, headed by Ernst Stavro Blofeld.

WYKEHAMISTS

During a Brexit debate yesterday, Jacob Rees-Mogg hit out at Nick Boles, saying: “My honourable friend makes a characteristically Wykehamist point – highly intelligent, but fundamentally wrong.”

A “Wykehamist” is someone who went to top public school Winchester College – unlike Mr Rees-Mogg, who went to rival Eton.
