END TO MIGRANT BOOM

EU migrants WON’T get priority access to Britain after Brexit, Sajid Javid finally confirms

The Government's long-awaited immigration white paper will be released tomorrow

HOME SECRETARY Sajid Javid WILL reveal plans for a new post-Brexit immigration system tomorrow – ending preferential treatment for EU migrants – despite a bitter Cabinet bust-up.

Sources claimed the new regime would be based on “what people contribute rather than where they come from”.

A cap on skilled workers such as health professionals will be axed – and there will be no limit on the numbers of international students allowed into Britain.

And there will be a “time-limited” short-term work route for low-skilled workers.

As the Sun revealed on Monday, these workers will not accrue residency rights, have access to benefits or be able to bring in family members.

Insiders said the full details were only likely later tomorrow –when the Immigration White Paper is finally published.

But Cabinet sources said there was STILL a fierce stand-off between No10 and the Home Office and Treasury over whether the paper would include a “tens of thousands” target – and the salary threshold for low-skilled workers.

The Sun Says

WE spoke too soon over the immigration plans Sajid Javid announced yesterday.

There is still much we like, especially no limit on highly skilled newcomers.

But to suddenly reveal that until at least 2025 unskilled ones can keep freely pouring in looking for work is a jaw-dropping own goal.

We thought we voted to end an immigration policy that depresses wages by encouraging firms to rely on cheap foreign labour instead of training up Brits and paying them decently.

“Taking back control”, Home Secretary? Not for years yet.

The PM wants to set this at £30,000 – with a cut-off date where the “taps are turned off” on low-skilled migrants a “few years” after the transition date.

One senior Tory said: "She still wants tens of thousands target, Sajid doesn't.

"But it's semantics."
