Theresa May slaps down meddling Tony Blair’s bid for 2nd referendum that betrays voters

THERESA May will today shoot down Tony Blair's bid for another damaging referendum, warning it won't solve anything.

As she tries to unite her party in opposition to the former PM, she will plead with them not to back another vote on Brexit.

Ex-PM Mr Blair has been begging for another vote for months, saying it's the only way to figure out what the people really want.

Over the weekend he urged Mrs May to ignore the 17million people who opted for Brexit the first time, and told campaigners to be ready for a second vote within weeks.

But a ferocious Mrs May will tell MPs today that it would "further divide our country at the very moment we should be working to unite it."

“Let us not break faith with the British people by trying to stage another referendum," Mrs May will urge her colleagues.

Tony Blair brands Brexit Britain 'a country in crisis' and pushes for 2nd referendum

"Another vote which would do irreparable damage to the integrity of our politics, because it would say to millions who trusted in democracy, that our democracy does not deliver."

And it would "likely leave us no further forward than the last," she will say.

Yesterday Mrs May launched a blistering attack on the Brexit saboteur, accusing him of insulting the people.

And she bluntly reminded him it was his own open-door immigration policy which spurred millions to vote leave.

She raged: “There are too many people who want to subvert the process for their own political interests – rather than acting in the national interest.

"For Tony Blair to go to Brussels and seek to undermine our negotiations by advocating for a second referendum is an insult to the office he once held and the British people he once served.

"We cannot, as he would, abdicate responsibility for this decision. Parliament has a democratic duty to deliver what the British people voted for."

Theresa May will say another vote won't solve anything

Mrs May’s patience snapped after an exhausting week of clashes with MPs and Eurocrats blocking her departure deal.

Mr Blair hit back by saying that Mrs May's stance was "irresponsible".

He wants to ask for an extension of Article 50 to have the time for another vote, or re-open talks with the EU.

But the bloc has said time and time again that more talks are NOT an option.

The Sun Says: Blair menace

TONY Blair is a delusional egomaniac who has damaged Britain more than any politician we can recall.

It was his negligence and naivety over dodgy intelligence that condemned 179 of our troops and countless Iraqis to their deaths during the 2003 invasion.

It was his decision to unleash a vast, uncontrolled influx of migrants on a country ill-equipped for it... all, as his adviser later admitted, to “rub the Right’s nose in diversity”.

It was his lust for wealth after leaving office that saw him torch what was left of his reputation and line his pockets with dictators’ millions.

Now Blair is hell-bent on setting a match to our democracy itself as he heads the campaign to reverse the biggest mandate in its history, sabotaging our Brexit negotiating position in the process.

And so the trail of destruction he has left for 15 years goes on. The common thread being his unassailable conviction, despite every single catastrophic mistake, that Tony always knows best.
