Demands increase for Theresa May to delay Britain’s EU exit as business chiefs warn of ‘serious casualties’
Former Tory Sir John Major lead the demands, calling for Article 50 to be revoked with immediate effect
CALLS for Theresa May to delay Britain’s EU exit have spiralled as business chiefs warn of “serious casualties” from Parliament’s deadlock.
Former Tory Sir John Major lead demands for the PM to “stop the clock” to buy more time after MPs refused to sign off her Brexit deal, with just 107 days to go.
Speaking in Dublin, Sir John said: “We need to revoke Article 50 with immediate effect.
"The clock, for the moment, must be stopped.
“It’s clear we now need the most precious commodity of all: time.
"Time for serious and profound reflection by both Parliament and people.
“There will be a way through the present morass, there always is.”
The PM sparked new alarm across company board rooms on Monday night by telling MPs a new vote on the EU agreement may not be held until as late as January 21.
British Chamber of Commerce boss Adam Marshall revealed his “dismay at the delay”.
Vice president of the CBI Paul Drechsler tweeted: “Contingency plans are not happening for majority of small firms — they won’t happen — serious casualties ahead”.

He added: “Economic vandals must not allow UK to fall into ‘no-deal’”.
The PM’s official spokesman again insisted the March 29 Brexit date will not be delayed, despite time running out to pass all the new laws needed for the exit to take place without chaos erupting.
He added: “We want to do this as quickly as possible”.
