Theresa May’s Brexit deal has been backed publicly by just three of her own MEPs

THERESA May’s Brexit deal has been backed publicly by just three of her own MEPs in Brussels ahead of the meaningful vote.

In another blow for the PM, the majority of the 18-strong Tory group in the EU Parliament are said to be critical of the agreement.

That raises the possibility they could vote against the package when it comes before the EU Parliament for approval early next year.

The Sun understands privately as few as five of the party’s euro MPs have confirmed their backing for the PM’s withdrawal package - a number disputed by party insiders.

A source said: “Most are hoping the Commons will do the dirty work for them by voting it down.”

Six members have publicly aired serious concerns about the deal.

The Sun contacted the remainder who have not voiced their views but was met with a wall of silence.

Just two replied to say they are waiting for the outcome of the meaningful vote before taking a firm stance.

One of those, Emma McClarkin, said: “There’s still a very long way to go to make sure we deliver the democratic vote of the British people.”

Those who haven’t declared their intentions include delegation leader Ashley Fox and group chief Syed Kamall.

But Mr Fox did say he “didn’t recognise” the number of dissenters and added the delegation has not held a formal discussion on the issue.

He said “some MEPs are in favour of the deal and some against”, but people could change their minds between now and the vote in February or March.
