Brexit Minister says that reversing the referendum result would be ‘catastrophic’ for British democracy
A BREXIT Minister says reversing the referendum result would be “catastrophic” for British democracy.
Newly appointed Kwasi Kwarteng hit out at campaigners behind a new vote saying it would “leave our country more divided than ever before”.
His remarks come just 48 hours ahead of MPs debating Theresa May’s Brexit deal in the Commons - before the crucial vote on December 11.
He said: “The public want us to see this through, not turn the clock back.
“We have a deal on the table that ensures we can and will thrive outside the European Union, and we must get on with delivering it.
“No longer will we be trapped in the back seat as the vehicle of European integration hurdles on.”
The comments follow shadow Chancellor John McDonnell who said last week Labour will “inevitably” back a second vote if they can’t force a general election.
Meanwhile, a cross-party group of 17 MPs including Tory MP Anna Soubry and Labour’s Chris Leslie have signed a joint letter backing another vote.
They say: “MPs on all sides have indicated privately they will support a People’s Vote if the Prime Minister’s “deal” falls.”
Mrs May will lead the debate on Tuesday, followed by Home Secretary Sajid Javid on Wednesday and Chancellor Philip Hammond on Thursday.
The PM is then expected to travel around the country on Friday before a planned TV debate next Sunday night.
