Labour WILL back second referendum on Brexit, Tony Blair claims as Corbyn’s pals plot with pro-EU activists

LABOUR is set to join the campaign to overturn Brexit, Tony Blair claimed today.

The ex-PM insisted Jeremy Corbyn is likely to start backing a second EU referendum in the near future.

Close allies of the leftie leader have been meeting anti-Brexit campaigners to discuss working together.

Mr Blair today slammed Theresa May's proposed deal with the EU, saying it doesn't "honour the Brexit mandate" and calling it a "dodo".

He told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show: "Your choice is between painful and pointless, and that's been the problem the whole time."

Asked if he thinks the Commons is likely to endorse a second referendum, he said: "Not yet but I think it will get there.

"I think it's moving that way - I would be really surprised if the Labour party doesn't end up in the position of supporting another vote."

But he insisted that if Britain did vote to Leave again in a re-run of the referendum, "I'll accept it and get behind it and try and make it work".

Treasury Secretary Liz Truss blasted Mr Blair, saying: "He just can't accept the world has moved on."
Labour's Caroline Flint, a Remainer who now endorses Brexit, slammed the "11th-hour attempt to overturn the result".

The party's current policy is that they want a Brexit deal keeping the UK in the customs union.

But they haven't ruled out supporting a second referendum if Mrs May refuses to change her policy or call a General Election.

Today it emerged Mr Corbyn's right-hand man John McDonnell has been holding secret talks with pro-EU campaigners.

He hosted a meeting with Mr Blair's former spin doctor Alastair Campbell and Tom Baldwin, who used to work for David Miliband.

Both men help to run the People's Vote campaign which calls for a second referendum.

Mr McDonnell : "I was happy to meet representatives from the People’s Vote campaign simply to map out what options are available to us based upon conference policy, which includes the option of a public vote."
