Theresa May to reveal plan to end free movement before putting Brexit deal to MPs
The Immigration White Paper paper will likely be published in the first week of December following an EU Council and just before the 'Meaningful Vote' on the deal
THERESA MAY plans to formally detail plans to end EU free movement just days before putting her Brexit deal to MPs, The Sun can reveal.
Sources claimed a delayed Immigration White Paper will finally be published the first week of December.
This means it would follow a planned EU Council but come before a crunch ‘Meaningful Vote’ on Brexit in the Commons in the middle of the month.
Labour insiders believe a vote is earmarked for December 10.
The White Paper will detail plans to take back control of borders by ripping up EU free movement rules to end unlimited EU immigration.
Insiders claim its release will be timed to win over ‘softer’ Eurosceptics still weighing up whether to vote down the Brexit agreement.
One source claimed: “This way it won’t antagonise the Europeans and can be used to remind MPs that the Government is taking back control of the UK’s borders.”
A Government-backed committee in September suggested ending preferential treatment for EU workers by putting migrants from the EU and Non-EU on an equal footing in a new visa scheme.
The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) called for far tighter restrictions on lower skilled workers in all areas other than agriculture.
Home Secretary Sajid Javid recently said there were some elements of the MAC report the Government would accept and others they would change.
Former Home Secretary Amber Rudd earlier this year told MPs the Government could negotiate away hard-won border controls as part of the future trade deal with Brussels.
The Home Office declined to comment on timings last night. A spokesman said: “We are in the process of developing and designing proposals for the UK’s future border and immigration system.
“An Immigration White Paper setting out this vision and outlining Government proposals will be published later this year.”
