Boris got the go ahead for a General Election in December

The PM saw off Labour and Lib Dem attempts to call the election early after an amendment for a December 9 poll was voted down.

MPs voted for the PM's election bill on its third reading - 438 to 20 - and now it must be scrutinised by the Lords.

If the Lords pass it – Brits will be going to the ballot boxes.

Brits will be given the chance to give the PM a majority to push through his Brexit Bill by the New Year as they prepare to vote in a fresh Parliament in just six weeks' time.

After Jeremy Corbyn's MPs blocked a vote three times, they finally came out to back his plan last night by 438 votes to 20.

Britain will now have a December election for the first time in nearly a century - after the Bill is rubber stamped in the House of Lords in the coming days.

Boris could force Brexit through by Christmas if he wins election majority

The PM's spokesperson confirmed plans for Parliament to sit the week after the planned election vote - from the 16 December onwards.

An election is now set to take place on December 12, giving the PM a few days to sort out his Cabinet and get everything ready to open Parliament again.

Then there could be several days before Christmas for the PM to try and push through his Brexit Bill again if he wants to.

That might leave even more time for debate on the Bill than Boris promised MPs this month.

If he wins an election Boris will be desperate to press Brexit through as soon as possible.

But that will all depend on whether the PM will be able to win the upcoming poll and secure enough MPs to push it through.

Remainer parties call for the voting age to be lowered

Labour, Lib Dems and SNP wanted the voting age lowered to 16 years old but No10 has dismissed the idea claiming it would result in a “logistical burden”.

The anti-Brexit group see their tactic as a way of attracting more votes at the upcoming election - with younger voters and teens more likely to back them.

This would then lead to more Remainer MPs that could help block Boris Johnson's Brexit deal bill being pushed through the Commons.

No10 has today threatened to pull the whole election bill if its amended to give younger people or EU citizens the vote.

This afternoon Labour MP Stephen Doughty announced he had tabled an amendment to the general election bill to which would allow 16 and 17 year olds the chance to cast their ballot.
