David Cameron admits he begged the Queen to intervene and help swing Scottish referendum result

DAVID Cameron has admitted he begged the Queen to help swing the 2014 Scots referendum.

Her Majesty is expected to remain above politics but the ex-PM says he discreetly lobbied her for “a raising of the eyebrow” after a shock opinion poll predicting the UK’s break-up.

Mr Cameron said he was staying with the Queen at Balmoral when the shock poll dropped.

The Tory boss described how it hit him “like a blow to the solar plexus” and led to a “mounting sense of panic that this could go the wrong way”.

And he claims in two-part BBC1 documentary The Cameron Years, starting Thursday night, it “helped” when she later told a well-wisher in Scotland she hoped “people would think very carefully about the future”.

The remark was leaped on by the No campaign as Her Majesty coming out against independence.

The former Tory chief also landed himself in hot water with the Queen just after the referendum result when he was caught on camera saying she “purred down the line” when he rang to tell her the result.

The pro-Union side won and his confession risks infuriating the Palace.

A spokeswoman for the Queen said: “It’s not something we would comment on.”
