Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe given new £100 wheelchair and calls it his ‘Chariot of Fire’

YORKSHIRE Ripper Peter Sutcliffe has been given a new £100 wheelchair — and calls it his Chariot of Fire.

Sutcliffe, 73, got it because his sight is failing and he often bumps into things if he walks unaided.

He gets helper Steve to wheel him to the jail’s healthcare unit. Sutcliffe, serving life for killing 13 women from 1975-80, uses his mum’s maiden name Coonan at HMP Frankland, Co Durham.

He told a pal: “A nurse told me they had a new chair delivered so I could have it.

“That was really nice of her, and it’s much better than an old one I used to use which had buckled wheels and zig-zagged all over the place. I had a sticker on my old one saying ‘Peter Coonan’s rust-bucket’.

“But Steve’s put a new one on with ‘Peter Coonan’s Chariot of Fire’ on it as we whizz around.

“I also lend it to the lads so they can pick up their packages from the canteen.”

The Ripper, who is blind in one eye and losing vision in the other, also has other ailments including diabetes, bladder problems and sores. He was recently stuck on a toilet overnight after a catheter failed to work.

Neil Jackson, 60, of Leeds — whose mother Emily, 42, was Sutcliffe’s second murder victim — said: “They seem to bend over backwards to keep him happy. It makes me sick.

“It’s the same old story of taxpayers paying for him while he lives the life of Riley.”
