It is claimed he sent a letter to Marian Maitlis to give to Emily “without reasonable excuse”.

Vines, 49, was briefly pals with Emily when they were at Cambridge University. He was jailed for 45 months last January for flouting his restraining order by writing to her from prison.

The inmate, representing himself, followed proceedings yesterday via a hearing loop at Nottingham crown court.

Vines, formerly of Oxford, but now of HMP Ranby in Retford, Notts, was remanded in custody. He is due to face a two-day trial next February.
