The jab slashed levels of bad fats in the blood by half, without patients suffering unpleasant side-effects.

In comparison, low-dose statins — taken by up to eight million Brits — reduce readings by about a third.

Top medics called Imperial College London’s results “phenomenal”.

The study was presented in Paris at the world’s largest gathering of heart experts.

Inclisiran works by silencing genes in the liver that stop the body breaking down cholesterol. It could be on the market within two years.

Experts said up to 700,000 high-risk patients should initially get the jab.

In the long term it could replace statins to guard against heart disease and strokes.

Half were given the six-monthly jabs.

Lead researcher Professor Kausik Ray told the European Society of Cardiology congress: “It is a game-changer for people to manage cholesterol.”

The jab’s makers have yet to reveal its cost, but say it will be “affordable”.

The NHS already offers two cholesterol jabs but these are fortnightly and cost more than £4,000 annually.
