Remainer rallying thousands for ‘Stop the Coup’ protest TODAY is hard-Leftist who called Remembrance Sunday ‘insidious’

A REMAINER rallying thousands for Stop the Coup protests today has been revealed as a hard-leftist who called Remembrance Sunday "insidious".

Momentum member Michael Chessum, 30, is one of the leaders calling for activists to "march to Buckingham Palace and protest the Queen" in a protest against Boris Johnson’s decision to suspend Parliament in his bid to deliver Brexit.

And it's not the first time Mr Chessum has been involved in protest activity.

He is most well-known for boycotting Remembrance Sunday while he was president of the University of London student's union - calling the event a "political statement" and "insidious".

Mr Chessum was also part of the student tuition fee protests in 2010 that saw protesters breaking into Conservative Party HQ at Millbank Tower and rioting in Parliament Square.

Speaking yesterday in the wake of today's anti-Brexit protests, he said "disruption is the only form of leverage protesters can rely on".

He added: "We would go further than anticipate (civil disobedience). We would defend it.

"There will be disruption and I'm sorry for that but in the face of what Boris is planning, it will be worth it. The suffragettes burnt down the home of David Lloyd George, the chancellor of the exchequer — I'm sure that was disruptive for him."

Momentum has called on their members to “occupy bridges and blockade roads” in an attempt to force the Government’s hand into reversing prorogation.

'EMOTIONS ARE RUNNING HIGH'

However, the foundation in memory of Labour MP Jo Cox, who was murdered in broad daylight by Nazi-obsessed murderer Thomas Mair before the 2016 Brexit vote, has called on protesters not to let their anger turn to violence.

The foundation said: "Emotions are running very high across the country this weekend, with many people extremely angry about the latest parliamentary moves over Brexit.

"While this is understandable, we are concerned that this anger should not spill over into something more dangerous.

"It is not for us to make a judgment on the tactics being employed by the government or its opponents, but we have a duty to remind everyone of the risks of fuelling extremism if people begin to lose faith in the democratic process."

Hotspots are expected to be outside Downing Street and cities such as Birmingham, Manchester, and Glasgow.

The PM blasted the mob, saying they should respect the views of the 17.4 million people who voted for Brexit in 2016.

He told Sky News:  “My message to them is that I think the worst thing for democracy now would be to cancel the referendum which is what some people are now suggesting – to nullify, to annul that result, to tell people that they were going to be ignored, after all the promises that have been made.

“It will do lasting and catastrophic damage to the major parties in this country and I think this political generation won’t be forgiven for failing to honour that promise.”

Shadow attorney general Baroness Chakrabarti also called on anti-Brexit protesters to take the streets.

She said: “If they try any more of this stuff we will use any means necessary to prevent this undemocratic behaviour – that includes people taking to the streets, that includes people taking to the airwaves, that includes people going to court.”
