BUILDING-SITE BREAK

Family’s TUI holiday hell after arriving at Greek resort to find ‘building site’ with chainsaws next to 30ft cliff

A FUMING dad has revealed his TUI holiday horror after arriving at a "building site" hotel in Corfu strewn with chainsaws, power tools and live wires.

Gutted Alex Duncan, 28, jetted off to the Akron Seascape resort in Corfu in May with his partner Claire Morrison, 30, their daughters and her mum and sister.

Debris was strewn all over the resort with renovations still under way
The rooms were also littered with cracked tiles
TUI's website posted several promo pics of the hotel boasting of the new renovations
Alex said the photographs online gave no indication that the revamp was still under way

The holidaymaker told of his shock at the state of the four-star getaway and blasted health and safety at the hotel after forking out £1,100 for him, his missus and kids to stay for a week.

TUI has apologised for the holiday ordeal and offered Alex a "gesture of good will".

Alex, from Aberdeen, also told how he couldn't take his eyes off his girls for fear they would plunge from a 30ft cliff surrounding the resort on the Greek island that he claims had no proper hand rail.

He told the Sun Online: "It was a total disaster.

"The pictures on the TUI website didn't show that it was still under renovation.

"When I got there I didn't expect the total lack of health and safety, especially with my two children being there.

"We got there and on day one it was a nightmare."

There were chainsaws left lying around our sun loungers, manholes, drains that weren't covered.

Oil worker Alex was left stunned at the state or the resort and has taken dozens of shocking snaps or the area.

He on: "Things just got worse and worse from then.

"There's a 30ft cliff with no hand rail on the grounds of the hotel where kids were running around.

"I just didn't feel safe. People were getting moved from the hotel but we didn't get that option.

"There were chainsaws left lying around our sun loungers, manholes, drains that weren't covered.

"They were totally exposed to anyone walking past who could have broken their leg.

"There were electric cables exposed, it looked like a building site. It was classed as four star, but it was never a four star hotel.

"We saw burn marks on the tables. It was just an absolute disaster from the word go."

Alex also said his partner's aunt - who is registered blind - was given a duplex and was forced to use stairs to get to the toilet and go to her room.

Holiday operator TUI offered to give Alex a £140 voucher to make up for his holiday nightmare but he said he didn't want it.

Alex added: "TUI came back and offered me 15% of my holiday, which was £140 in a voucher. I told them I didn't want it.

We could not take our eyes off our kids because of the fear something might happen.

Alex Duncan

"The whole thing is outrageous."

TUI's website says that the hotel is looking "box-fresh for 2019 thanks to a makeover."

It adds: "The refurbishment added in swim-up rooms and a Kids’ Club by TUI FAMILY LIFE for the little ones.

"Modern decor features indoors, while the revamped pool area takes centre stage outside."

But raging Alex paints a totally different picture.

He fumed: "I was lying on my sun lounger and thought 'what is that lying there?'

"It was a massive chainsaw without a guard or anything. My kids could have easily fallen on it and injured their hand or face or anything.

"The cliff top itself as well was an absolute hazard. How that's allowed I don't know. I was absolutely shocked.

"When you think about going to these holiday complexes you think it going to be secure and safe.

"It wasn't like that at all. We could not take our eyes off our kids because of the fear something might happen."
