British woman, 30, left in a coma after falling 12ft through empty restaurant window frame at Ibiza hotel where three tourists have died in four years
A 30-YEAR-OLD British woman was left in a coma after falling 12ft through an empty restaurant window frame at an Ibiza hotel where three tourists have died in four years.
Monica McGeachie was trying to lean on the glass for balance while grabbing a dropped flip flop before she crashed down onto the concrete below, breaking her back and ankles.
Monica, from Argyll in Scotland, is now lying in an induced coma and is expected to stay in hospital for weeks yet as her family keep vigil by her bedside.
The diver suffered swelling on the brain, two broken ankles, and a broken back and shoulder in the horror fall.
Her shattered relatives have blasted the two-star Hotel Piscis - with sister Joanne accusing a security guard of dragging the stricken tourist along the ground as she lay with horrific injuries from hitting the concrete below.
'COVERED UP'
Joanne, 38, also claims staff were hesitant to alert emergency crews and “covered up” the horror by clearing away blood through the night.
And the mum of three alleged she was abused after lodging an official complaint with the San Antonio hotel.
Joanne said: “All of us are very angry with the hotel. Quite a few people saw Monica fall because they had to run round and get through a window to get to her.
“A security guard basically picked Monica up and tried to drag her out of the hotel. Fortunately a crowd had gathered round and managed to stop that."
She claimed the hotel were "very reluctant" to call an ambulance, but a Spanish lady helped them get one.
“They’re really trying to cover it up in Ibiza.”
A photo shows her smiling and holding up a huge plate with a “Happy Birthday” message just hours before the horror unfolded.
TRAUMA
Joanne, who is staying on the Spanish island until her daughter recovers, said the event has been particularly traumatic for those working at the hotel.
“By the time Monica’s friends and the family were back from the hospital, they had a team in fixing the window and bleaching the whole area so there was no evidence," she said.
“They also cordoned it all off. Her friends who witnessed it are in a terrible state. "One of the guys hasn’t been able to go back to work yet. It’s so traumatic and you can see it in their faces.
“It’s bad enough for us but they had to see it happen. We thought she wasn’t going to survive at first."
The incident is the latest tragedy to strike the hotel.
In May a 33-year-old British man died in a room at the same hotel in San Antonio.
Two Brits died within a month of each other at the hotel in 2015, when it was known as the Piscis Park Hotel.
Andrew Watson, 32, from Newcastle, was found dead on the floor of his room on June 8 2015.
Scot Robert Gillespie, 26, died on May 30 2015 at the same two-star hotel after plunging from the fifth-floor there during a stag party.
The hotel said circumstances around Monica’s fall were “unclear” and a probe had been launched.
A spokesman added: “This is a tragic accident and we hope Monica recovers as soon as possible.”
