BACKING BREXIT

Donald Trump’s adviser John Bolton says US will ‘enthusiastically’ support No Deal Brexit as he vows bumper trade deal

DONALD Trump’s adviser John Bolton today said the US will "enthusiastically" support a No Deal Brexit as he vows both countries will benefit from a bumper trade deal.

Mr Bolton also said London and Washington could agree trade deals on a sector-by-sector basis, leaving more difficult areas in the trading relationship until later.

Mr Bolton, America's national security adviser, told reporters today that the States would be eager to support a no-deal Brexit if that was what the UK government decided to press ahead with.

He added that the ultimate aim was to achieve a comprehensive trade deal.

Boris Johnson met with Mr Bolton and senior officials to discuss "the close UK-US trading relationship and our shared commitment to an ambitious free trade agreement once the UK leaves the EU.

“They also spoke about Brexit and a range of other issues – including Iran, Hong Kong and 5G,” said a Downing Street spokesperson.

Mr Bolton attacked the EU and said the UK's decision to leave the bloc should be respected.

He said: "The fashion in the European Union when the people vote the wrong way from the way that the elites want to go is to make the peasants vote again and again until they get it right."

Mr Bolton said it was "hard to imagine" people in the UK did not know "what was at stake" when they voted to leave the EU in 2016.

When it came to doing a trade deal, he stated the US had been "ready to negotiate" with Theresa May's government.

But he added: "We want to move very quickly. We wish we could have moved further along in this with the prior government.

"We were ready to negotiate. We are ready to negotiate now."

Mr Bolton said the countries could concentrate on areas they can agree on first.

He added: "The idea of doing it in pieces rather than waiting for the whole thing is not unprecedented.

"I think here we see the importance and urgency of doing as much as we can agree on as rapidly as possible because of the impending October 31 exit date."

Asked whether piecemeal trade agreements like this are allowed under WTO rules, Mr Bolton said: "Our trade negotiators seem to think it is."

IRAN, CHINA AND HUAWEI

The top adviser maintained that issues like Iran, China and Huawei could be put off until after Brexit.

He said: "The message I wanted to convey on Iran, and on some other issues in which I include China, 5G, Huawei - that cluster of issues - is that the President and the US Government fully understands that in the next few days the UK Government has a singular focus on the Brexit issue, so that we are not hoping for anything on these broad and complex questions."

But, Mr Bolton added, "we just ask that, as issues come up, we resolve them individually and we reserve the time to have a larger conversation on some of these important issues at a moment that is really right for the new government. We just felt we owe them that."

TRUMP UPDATED ON BREXIT

Boris Johnson and Donald Trump have talked on the phone for the third time in just three weeks as they continued to lay the ground for a bumper post-Brexit trade deal.

The PM and President had their latest chat as Mr Trump's top security adviser flew into Britain.

The discussions come after a tense last few weeks between Mrs May and Mr Trump in the last days of her premiership - and show a new pally relationship is on the cards.

A Downing Street spokesperson said this afternoon: "The Prime Minister spoke to President Trump today. They discussed global economic issues and trade, and the Prime Minister updated the President on Brexit."

The pair - who were chummy even before Boris became PM - have met and talked on the phone several times before.

The White House said they held discussions on trade, 5G and global security, and on how to thrash out a new partnership for after we leave the EU.

'AMBITIOUS'

Both leaders have openly stressed how keen they are to get a huge trade deal signed after Britain leaves the bloc.

Mr Trump and Mr Johnson will meet for the first time at the G7 summit in Biarritz later this month, where the latter is also set for his first face-to-face talks with EU leaders.

Meanwhile Mr Bolton is in town for two days of talks with the new Government.

He was also to meet with Edward Lister, Boris' adviser, Mark Sedwill, the Cabinet Secretary, and new Chancellor Sajid Javid.
