It was thrown at him at the door to the inmate’s cell at HMP Woodhill, Bucks.

He had only been in the job for 12 months.

Andy Baxter, of the Prison Officers’ Association, said: "He's been through the full range of emotions and even believed at one stage this was just part of the job.

"But, he now realises everybody - whatever their job - has the right to work in as safe environment as possible.

"Nobody should be injured like this at work.";

The attack took place on one of the main units at the high security jail, which houses murderers and terrorists.

Assaults on prison staff jumped 15 per cent in the year to March to hit a record high of 10,311.
