Senior police officer escapes driving ban after crashing into a car while making hands-free call

A TOP cop who crashed into a car while making a hands-free phone call to her MP husband escaped a driving ban yesterday.

Kerrin Wilson, 51, Lincolnshire assistant chief constable, had strayed on to the wrong side of the road.

She was said to be distracted as she tried to find the Bluetooth button on her steering wheel.

The other driver, Leanne Storr, suffered whiplash and bruising in the crash in Nettleham, Lincs, on December 21 last year.

Wilson, who admitted driving without due care and attention, was ordered to pay £1,460 in fines and costs. She also had seven points added to her licence.

Chairman of the bench David Clarson said: “In this case we have somebody who has shown remorse and pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.”

Wilson, of Heighington, Co Durham, did not appear at Nottingham magistrates’ court.

After the hearing, she said in a statement: “This incident has really shaken me. I’d like to apologise to the other driver.”

Wilson, married to Labour MP Phil Wilson, is being investigated for misconduct in ­relation to the crash.
