Donald Trump promises Brexit bonanza after UK leaves EU in first chat with new PM Boris Johnson
DONALD Trump promised a Brexit bonanza after the UK leaves the EU in his first chat with new PM Boris Johnson on Friday.
The two leaders vowed to begin work to thrash out a huge new economic relationship between Britain and the US, the White House said last night.
They spoke on Friday - two days after Boris took over at Number 10 following his Conservative Party leadership election victory.
President Trump's press secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement on Monday: "President Donald J. Trump spoke with Prime Minister Boris Johnson last Friday in their first official communication since the Prime Minister took office.
"They discussed the importance of continuing to strengthen the special relationship between the United States and United Kingdom.
"Specifically, they agreed to immediately deepen and expand the bilateral economic relationship upon the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union."
'UNPARALLELED OPPORTUNITIES'
The statement mirrors how Downing Street described the leaders' warm chat on Friday.
A spokesman for the Prime Minister said Trump and Boris focused on strengthening their countries' relationship post-Brexit.
They discussed the "unparalleled" opportunities Brexit will bring to the Special Relationship.
And the pair vowed to broker an "ambitious" free trade deal as soon as the UK leaves the EU.
A Downing Street spokesperson said: "This evening the Prime Minister spoke to President Trump, who congratulated him on his new role.
"They discussed the important relationship between our countries and the President’s successful State Visit to the UK last month.
"They agreed that Brexit offers an unparalleled opportunity to strengthen the economic partnership between the UK and United States.
"The leaders both expressed their commitment to delivering an ambitious free trade agreement and to starting negotiations as soon as possible after the UK leaves the EU.
"The Prime Minister and the President also discussed the current tensions with Iran and the need to work together and with partners to address their destabilising behaviour in the Gulf.
"They ended by looking forward to seeing each other at the G7 Summit in Biarritz next month."
'SENSATIONAL RELATIONSHIP'
The chummy pair have met previously when Boris was Foreign Secretary.
They also talked multiple times over the last month during Boris' successful leadership run.
It's expected that the new PM will make visiting his friend in the US one of his top priorities to kick-start talks for a bumper trade deal.
Last week, US Ambassador Woody Johnson said Trump and Johnson will have a "sensational" relationship.
He said: "The new relationship between your new Prime Minister and our President... it's going to be sensational.
"He shows a lot of leadership, it's very positive.
"Their leadership has a lot in common. Both have their own style but similarities - a clear vision of what they want to accomplish."
Britain will be at the "front of the line" for a new trade deal with the US after we officially leave the EU, he added.
"The President is going to try and move the ball forwards - the UK is our most important ally in security and prosperity, he knows that."
