Meghan, who chose 15 "inspirational" women for the cover, said she instinctively chose Michelle for the Q&A section on the back page after seeing her speak at the Royal Festival hall.

, she explained: "My first thought was it needed to be someone kind, inspirational, motivating, funny, with gravitas and as much depth as levity.

"My second thought: it needed to be Michelle Obama."

The Duchess, 37, said the friends discussed the piece "over a casual lunch of chicken tacos and my ever-burgeoning bump".

And Meghan, who gave birth to Archie in May, says she was left "speechless" by the replies she sent over to her "relatively simple" questions.

In the candid Q&A, Michelle, 55, revealed that motherhood for her had been a "masterclass in letting go".

The mother of two said she'd been "humbled and heartened" by the resilience of her daughters Malia and Sasha, now 21 and 18, who had grown up to be "smart, compassionate and independent young women".

There is something so magical about having a baby in the house. Time expands and contracts; each moment holds its own little eternity. I’m so excited for you and Harry to experience that, Meghan. Savour it all.

When asked what advice she gave them, Michelle said she encouraged them to "keep trying new experiences" - and that what might not necessarily feel right today but might feel right tomorrow.

She said: "What I hope my daughters will realise a little earlier is that there is no prescribed path, that it’s OK to swerve, and that the confidence they need to recognise that will come with time."

'SAVOUR IT, MEGHAN'

Answering a "wild-card" question on the most beautiful sound she'd ever heard, Michelle addressed Meghan's parental status directly, saying she was "so excited" about her friend becoming a parent.

"Don’t get me wrong, early parenthood is exhausting," she said. "I’m sure you know a thing or two about that these days.

"But there is something so magical about having a baby in the house. Time expands and contracts; each moment holds its own little eternity.

Meghan spent seven months working alongside editor Edward Enniful for magazine, which is out this Friday.

Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg, novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Adern are among Meghan's choices.

Buckingham Palace said the Forces for Change edition highlights "trailblazing change makers, united by their fearlessness in breaking barriers".
