Boris booed in Scotland after he rules out second independence referendum
BORIS Johnson was booed in Scotland today after he ruled OUT another divisive independence referendum vote.
The new PM said on his first visit to Scotland that there was "no reason" for Scots to have another vote that First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is demanding.
He was shouted at and booed in Edinburgh today, where he met Ms Sturgeon. The city voted 74 per cent to Remain back in the 2016 referendum.
Earlier Boris insisted that like the Brexit vote, the Scottish indy ref was a "historic" and "once in a generation" poll.
"I see no reason now for the politicians to go back on that promise," he said as he arrived on his first visit north of the border since he was elected last week.
Further damage to faith in politics would happen if he gave the green light to a second ballot, he added.
And he hit out at the "campaign to destroy the union" and vowed to back Scots Tory boss Ruth Davidson completely in her quest to fight Ms Sturgeon.
He hailed her as a "fantastic leader of Scottish Conservatives", adding: "I am lost in admiration at what she has achieved, I am a massive fan of the way she has taken the argument to those who would destroy our union."
Sources claim First Minister Ms Sturgeon set out her “strong opposition” to a cliff-edge EU exit in a phone call with Mr Johnson.
After Boris Johnson was appointed Prime Minister she insisted a second Scottish independence referendum was “more essential than ever”.
He will meet with the first minister and Scottish Tory leader this afternoon.
Ms Davidson warned him earlier that all her Scottish MPs vote for Theresa May's deal as part of a tense chat with him earlier.
She said; "I want to make sure we get a deal," and called on other parties to compromise.
"People in the Labour party, the SNP, the Lib Dems, if they don't want to see a No Deal scenario then they've got to vote for the deal that's brought back and I support the Prime Minister in securing that deal."
But yesterday in an article for the Scottish Mail on Sunday she slammed his No Deal plans, adding: “I don’t think the government should pursue a no-deal Brexit and, if it comes to it, I won’t support it.”
In the coming days Boris will do a whistle-stop tour of the UK - with trips to Wales and Northern Ireland on the cards.
The meeting with Ms Sturgeon is expected to take place at her official residence of Bute House in Edinburgh.
The PM pushed the country's No Deal Brexit plans full-steam ahead today with war cabinet meetings, one billion of extra cash and ramped up preparations.
The PM still polls disastrously in Scotland – a problem that dates back to 2004 when, as editor of the Spectator, he published a poem calling for the “extermination” of the “verminous Scottish race”.
A YouGov poll claimed three quarters of Scottish people believe he is incompetent.
