Boris Johnson and Donald Trump are going to have a ‘sensational’ relationship and leaders have a ‘lot in common’ says US ambassador

BORIS Johnson and Donald Trump are going to have a "sensational" relationship as they have so much in common, the US ambassador has said.

Sir Woody Johnson lavished praise on the new PM this morning and said he was "very effective and optimistic".

Speaking to the BBC this morning he said: "The new relationship between your new Prime Minister and our President... it's going to be sensational.

"He shows a lot of leadership, it's very positive.

"Their leadership has a lot in common. Both have their own style but similarities - a clear vision of what they want to accomplish."

Britain will be at the "front of the line" for a new trade deal with the US after we officially leave the EU, he added.

"The President is going to try and move the ball forwards - the UK is our most important ally in security and prosperity, he knows that."

But both countries need to focus on the positives and the "things we agree on" to have a good relationship, he stressed.

The message chimes with Boris' can-do optimistic vision for Britain he's pumped out in the last 48 hours since he became Tory leader and PM.

President Trump immediately tweeted on Tuesday to congratulate him on his appointment, and say he would be a "great" PM.

The blonde-mopped pair have met previously when Boris was Foreign Secretary, and the pair have chatted on the phone multiple times in the last month.

It's expected that the new PM will make visiting his friend in the US one of his top priorities to kick-start a bumper trade deal for after we leave the EU.

"We're going to have bumps in the road, no question, but we are two great countries," Sir Woody added this morning.

"If we look forward optimistically between our two countries we're going to lift all the people in this country - to independence and all the things you voted for in the referendum.

"I think that's what the President wants and what your new Prime Minister wants too."
