Hardline Brexiteer Steve Baker snubs Boris Johnson by rejecting his old ‘powerless’ job as Brexit Minister
ARCH Brexiteer Steve Baker last night turned down the offer of a “powerless” junior minister job.
The MP, instrumental in Theresa May’s demise, was offered his old post of Brexit Minister.
But in a tweet after storming out of Downing Street, Mr Baker said he couldn’t bear to reprise the role.
And he warned Boris “disaster awaits” if he fails to deliver Brexit by October 31.
Insiders said the snub was the first sign that Eurosceptic Tories will not “automatically swallow” what the new PM agreed with Brussels.
Mr Baker has been saying he wouldn’t accept anything less than a Cabinet job of Brexit Secretary.
The snub came as Boris looked to fill 28 junior posts. The first jobs went to long-time allies Conor Burns and Kit Malthouse, cementing what critics called the ‘Vote Leave’ takeover of Government.
Continuing the bloodiest reshuffle in modern political history, Mr Johnson made old pal Mr Malthouse Policing Minister.
Mr Malthouse has led the work on how to tear up the Irish backstop.
Mr Burns was made International Trade minister and fellow Leaver Nigel Adams was made culture minister.
Brexiteer Alex Burghart was made Mr Johnson’s personal ministerial aide.
