Crowds dancing at music festival trigger minor earthquakes – and scientists can work what songs were playing
CROWDS dancing at a festival triggered minor earthquakes — allowing scientists to work out what song was playing.
The biggest tremors were recorded during a headline set by indie band Two Door Cinema Club at Tramlines Festival on Friday night.
Seismologist Paul Denton said the frequency of the vibrations matched the beats per minute in each song — meaning it was possible to determine what was being played.
Around 100,000 people attended the three-day festival in Sheffield over the weekend.
Manic Street Preachers, and Nile Rogers and Chic were also on the bill.

But Two Door Cinema Club’s hits Undercover Martyn and I Can Talk caused the biggest tremors, says Mr Denton — a project leader at the British Geological Survey.
He added: “The dancing (and hence the vibrations) are concentrated in the chorus section of each song.”
Festival-goer Jake Ashton, 23, of Warrington, Cheshire, said: “It was pretty mad. We danced at the back but everyone nearer the front was going mental.”
