THE trailer for the star-studded movie version of the hit musical Cats was released yesterday - but first impressions were far from cuddly.

Some viewers reacted with horror at seeing celebs like Taylor Swift, Dame Judie Dench and James Corden appear as strange human-faced felines.

Film critic Scott Mendelson tweeted that the trailer was "appropriately terrifying and insane, like a drug-induced nightmare. I can't wait!"

The movie - to be released in December - also stars Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen and Idris Elba.

It uses the actors' faces and covers their bodies in computer generated fur as they sing and dance on a larger than life set.

But plenty of fans were left feeling unnerved by the hybrid human-cat CGI creations.

YouTube-viewer Charlotte Eller commented: "Taylor I love you but this is gonna give me nightmares."

The trailer racked up more than 100,000 views in the first hour and the #Cats hashtag quickly became the top tending item on Twitter.

The film - directed by Brit Oscar-winner Tom Hooper - is the first movie adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's smash stage musical.

Based on the poems of TS Eliot, Cats opened in 1981 and became one of the longest-running shows on both Broadway and London's West End.

In a behind-the-scenes video, Oscar-winner Judie Dench called the film "an Alice in Wonderland experience."

Swift, known for her love of cats, said cast members did extensive movement workshops to embody their feline characters.

She said in a behind-the-scenes clip: "As a cat lover, and a cat owner, he (Hooper) told me I was going to get to go to cat school every day.

"For work! What?!"

Cats is due to hit cinemas on December 20.
