Run-down blue beach hut in Wales sells for £110k despite having no power or water as it overlooks one of Britain’s best beaches
A RUN-DOWN beach hut with no running water or power has sold at auction for a whopping £110,000.
The shabby hut with peeling blue paint sold for the staggering amount because it overlooks one of the UK’s best beaches in Abersoch, North Wales.
The hut is 11ft by 10ft, peeling with paint and has no power or water. The crowd at the auction in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Liverpool, tittered before bidding opened.
Sutton Kersh auctioneer Andrew Binstock joked: “They sell anything these days.”
But he added: “I know the beach at Abersoch having been there myself, these beach huts are highly sought after."
Bidding started at £100,000 and the price quickly rose in chunks of £2,000 to £110,000. The buyer of the hut has not been revealed.
Local planning policies in the area prohibit the connection of any main services including water, drainage or electricity and the beach hut cannot be slept in overnight.
Senior Branch Manager at Beresford Adams Martin Lewthwaite, who dealt with the property, said he wasn't surprised at the closing price of the hut.
He told The Sun Online: "It's quite common round here in Abersoch. It's a very popular seaside destination, especially for those who can afford a second property but there's quite a mix of people."
When describing the hut, he said: "If you think about your garden shed with wooden panelling, that's essentially it.
"The council won't let any main utilities go there and say it is for leisure and for getting changed because there is no foundation there. Although, you might be able to bring a kettle for a cup of tea."
Another shack on the beach sold for £160,000 in summer 2017.
Katie Donohue, auction valuer/business development manager at Sutton Kersh Auctions, said: "It is a very well known popular tourist location that attracts people from all over."
You can rent a beach hut at the Welsh hotspot for £400 per week.
