Mattel released the toy to mark the 50th anniversary of the UK release of Bowie’s hit single Space Oddity.

A spokesman for the toy company said: “In a definitive celebration of two pop culture icons, Barbie honours the ultimate pop chameleon, English singer, songwriter and actor David Bowie, whose dramatic musical transformations continue to influence and inspire.

“This collectable Barbie doll honours the cultural legacy of the musical genius who redefined rock and roll. Colours and decoration may vary.”

Life on Mars singer Bowie created Ziggy in 1971. The character first featured on 1972’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

But the character was retired in 1973, with Bowie’s new alter-ego Aladdin Sane taking his place.

Bowie died of liver cancer in January 2016.

Other special edition dolls to have been released by Mattel in the past include figurines of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, Grace Kelly, J.K. Rowling and Prince William and Kate Middleton.
