Theresa May urges Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt to strengthen the bond between UK nations in No10
THERESA May will today tell Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt to make the job of strengthening the bond between UK nations their “first and greatest duty” in No 10.
The outgoing PM will make her first intervention in the Tory leadership contest during a speech in Scotland — with a veiled warning on the dangers a No Deal Brexit would pose to the future of the union.
On the eve of the contenders’ hustings in Perth, she will call for Brexit to be implemented in a way that will work for all four nations.
Mrs May will also say the job of PM “brings privileges and responsibilities which you only really feel once the black door closes behind you.”
She will add: “I am confident that whoever succeeds me in 10 Downing Street will make the union their priority.”
Mrs May will say her successor must “ensure we go on facing the future together. . .achieving more together than we ever could apart."
But ahead of the PM’s visit, Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said Mrs May’s legacy will be independence north of the border.
She described the Tories’ behaviour towards Scotland since the Brexit vote as “high-handed, arrogant and dismissive.”

Meanwhile, Mrs May is set to break precedent by speaking publicly during her successor’s first Tory party conference.
Ex-PM’s usually remain silent for a period after leaving office.
But Mrs May will speak at a literary festival in September as the Conservatives gather in Manchester.
