Schoolgirl scarred for life by Starbucks tea she was carrying under her arm is awarded £75,000
A SCHOOLGIRL who was scalded by a cup of Starbucks tea she was carrying under her arm has been awarded more than £75,000.
Demi Mooney, 16, was 12 when she was left with permanent scars after the takeaway cup burst open in December 2014.
She bought a Frappuccino coffee, a tea and a large cookie with her grandmother at a Starbucks branch in Dublin.
The girl was holding her coffee in her left hand, the cookie in her right hand and the tea between her elbow and her ribs as she took her treats to her table.
A lawsuit brought on Demi's behalf by her mum Siobhan Mooney argued that Starbucks was to blame for the accident.
It was claimed that staff at the branch failed in their duty of care by neglecting to provide a tray for her.
PERMANENT SCARS
A doctor and a nurse who happened to be in the coffee shop offered first aid and Demi was rushed to Temple Street Children's Hospital.
She has since undergone a number of treatments in the hospital's Plastics Clinic as well as occupational therapy.
Her consultant has said further treatment to Demi's permanent scars could make them look worse, the family's solicitor said.
And she has been forced to wear long-sleeved tops because she fears being teased about the scars.
Michael Byrne SC, for Demi, said an offer of €85,000 (£75,880) had been made by Starbucks.
The compensation payment was approved by Mr Justice Simons, who said it equalled what a judge would probably decide the case was worth.
