Boris-backers blast ‘Soviet-style’ neighbours who recorded row with Carrie – as members still back him for No10
BORIS Johnson and Carrie Symmond's neighbours are acting like Soviets in the Eastern bloc by spying on them and taping their conversations, one of his allies has blasted.
Priti Patel hit out at the Remainer couple for releasing the tapes to newspapers last week, and insisted Boris will "never" reveal the details of what happened as it should be kept private.
The loyal supporter of the Brexiteer said Boris has never spoken about his private life and won't do it now.
It comes as Tory members were still set to back him to be the next PM, despite the argument which led to the police being called to the flat he shared with Carrie last week.
Ms Patel, the ex-international development secretary, told Radio 4: "He's never talked about his private life and he never will.
"Boris has a right to a private life."
She blasted the neighbours who rang the cops and gave a recording of the row to the Guardian as running a "very clear politically motivated series of attacks on Boris".
And she said: "Taping someone in their private home is not the kind of behaviour we'd expect in our country.
"It's the type of behaviour associated in the old Eastern bloc."
The argument between them is done and dusted, she added, and people should move on.
Mr Hunt said today that "raving leftie" papers like The Guardian would of course have their own agenda.
He told LBC: "If I was editing The Guardian, I would be a raving leftie and I would splash on it every single day, but I’m not a raving leftie. I’m the opposite of that."
Jacob Rees-Mogg, a backer of Boris, weighed in too with a furious rant against the newspaper: "Who reached first of all for their mobile telephone recording and then sends it off to the Guardian?
"That's a snooper.
"And the Guardian, the pious Guardian, that was obsessed by phone hacking, led a campaign, a moral crusade.
"They are hypocritical lefties and we should know that, it's do as I say and not as I do.
"The Guardian should be ashamed of the way its behaved in dealing with this sort of person."
SHOULD BE ASHAMED
And he added: "I do have this visions of them putting their glass to the wall with their mobile.
"How long they have they been doing that?
"Were they doing it say in, day out, just in case they might catch a snippet of conversation that they could pass onto a newspaper?
"It's all very unsavoury."
I think for people to record through the wall what is being said is absolutely disgusting
Nigel Farage
Even Nigel Farage weighed in to the row saying: "I think for people to record through the wall what is being said is absolutely disgusting.
"There has to be a limit to this intrusion on people's private lives.. who hasn't had an argument?"
But he urged Boris to explain what happened because it was a "matter of public record and public interest."
"Because the police were called, it's as simple as that."
Boris-backer Matt Hancock added: "I don't think anyone would like their conversations late at night to be snooped on and listened in to."
The Sun revealed today that Boris and Carrie have had a series of rows in the past few weeks - but have vowed to stick together and make it work.
Today the pair were pictured for the first time since the row, smiling and holding hands in what appeared to be a pub garden.
They looked loved up and happy as one pal said they wanted to get married as soon as the time is right.
Mr Hunt said today he wasn't interested in discussing Boris' private life, but insisted he should come forward for more head-to-head debates and face more tough questioning.
Speaking earlier today he branded him a "coward" and said he was being "disrespectful" to Tory members by not fully explaining his plans for Brexit.
"People don't know what Boris will do when he comes into No10," he told Sky News earlier.
"Boris has got a number of brilliant qualities... the way to earn trust with members and the country is to subject yourself to scrutiny.
"I think it's very important Boris is honest with people".
Despite the row over his love life, members were still ready to back him to be Britain's next PM, polls showed.
Even though he's taken a slump since news of the argument emerged, Boris is still on track to win.

Caroline Hutt, 60, told : "I don’t care about the headlines over Boris and his domestic issue. In fact, I would like to see the person who recorded the matter, actually charged."
And Suky Samra, a Walsall councillor, and party member for 20 years, said: "We need to deliver Brexit. I’m aware of reports concerning Boris. But they are unsubstantiated and although the police attended there was no cause for police action. There’s a Get Boris campaign. He’s the frontrunner and in my opinion is the only one who can deliver Brexit."
