BOOTED Tory leadership candidate Dominic Raab splurged nearly £60,000 on Facebook adverts before he was eliminated.

The Brexiteer was knocked out of the race to become the next prime minister last night after he only got the support of 30 MPs.

Former Brexit secretary Mr Raab spent  far more than any other candidate despite coming sixth in the contest.

He forked out £56,757 on targeted adverts as of the end of last week - twelve times in total what Boris has spent so far.

That included a whopping £39,762 in just one week, research from Storyful news agency revealed.

The adverts focused mainly on backing Mr Raab as the candidate to deliver Brexit, with the phrase: "Back Brexit, back Raab" used frequently.

Some said: "Voters have sent us a very clear message: unless we get on and actually leave the EU they will rightly kick us out at the next election.

"I believe that I have the plan to ensure we can leave the EU by the end of October, as well as the tenacity and experience to see it through."

More than 100 of the ads would have been seen by millions of people throughout the leadership race.

Allies said that they think he's got a good shot of a top job in the next Cabinet - for whoever does become the next PM.

The money trumps all of the other candidates, who haven't spent nearly as much online.

Boris Johnson has spent £4,429 in the same period in a sign that he's confident in his backing from MPs and members so far.

But Sajid forked out £1015 on ads for the social networking site.

Jeremy Hunt, Rory Stewart, Michael Gove and Jeremy Hunt haven't spent anything at all.

Tories are limited to spending £150,000 on their campaigns, as per Conservative party rules.

On Twitter, Mr Stewart dominates the field after his walkabout videos with members of the public were a hit with viewers.

His official account got almost three times the number of engagements of Boris Johnson, analysis from the last month showed (which includes favourites, re-tweets and replies).

The International Development Secretary racked up 772,000 engagements compared to Boris' 263,000  in the same period of time.

Dominic Raab says Tories are 'toast' if Brexit gets delayed

All candidates needed to get at least 33 backers in yesterday's contest to get through to the next round.

Today they will face the next round where the person with the least votes will be kicked out.

Boris is still the frontrunner, followed by Jeremy Hunt, then Michael Gove.

Sajid Javid slipped through with exactly 33 votes, and Rory Stewart is just ahead of him on 37.
