The British woman, who made the historic claims against him to police last year, is said to be “disappointed” by the decision to drop her case.

A source said: “She is very upset. Police have been very supportive but have told her they can’t prosecute him.”

The woman, now aged in her 60s, alleged the rape occurred in Sheffield in the 1980s.

Mr Matthews has strenuously denied all allegations.

South Yorkshire Police said they could not comment on the case.

He has been accused of two offences between 1998 and 1999 by a woman now in her 30s.

One is said to have happened on the Caribbean island of St Barts, where Mr Matthews owns the £5,000-a-night Eden Rock Hotel. The second allegedly took place in Paris.

Mr Matthews was arrested over the claims at a Paris airport last year.

Under French law suspects are charged when they are brought before a court but the allegations are still being investigated.
