Gerald Ratner jokes about Michael Gove saying ‘people shouldn’t be defined by their biggest mistakes’ after PM hopeful’s coke shame

JEWELLERY boss Gerald Ratner has joked about Michael Gove's coke shame, saying he wished people weren't defined by the biggest mistake they have made.

The businessman, who was famously caught making a joke about how terrible his own company's products were, made a light-hearted pop at the Environment boss' woes today.

He tweeted earlier: "Michael Gove ‘'people shouldn’t be defined by the biggest mistake they’ve made in their lives'. I wish."

The message later went vital online, with hundreds of likes and thousands of retweets.

Mr Ratner, formerly chief executive of the British jewellery firm Ratners Group shot to fame when he called one of his products "total c**p".

And he added one of the sets of earrings was "cheaper than an M&S prawn sandwich but probably wouldn't last as long".

The comments saw the shares in the business plummet by around £500million, and nearly saw it collapse altogether.

He was fired by the new company leader a year later, and it changed its name.

Mr Gove is desperately clinging onto his leadership bid today after the revelations that he did coke as a young man came out over the weekend.

He admitted to doing the class A drug on several occasions, and said he was lucky to escape prison too.

Yesterday he gave a grovelling apology live on TV to his MPs, begging for their forgiveness.

He said it was "human" to have flaws and he "make a mistake" by taking the class A drug several times when he was in his 30s.

And the PM-wannabe begged Tory MPs for their forgiveness, saying "people should never be defined by the worst decisions they made.

"They should have a chance to redeem themselves and to change.

"The mistake I made, I would not want anyone else to make.

"People should look for the treasure and the heart of every man and try to give people the chance to make a contribution.

"If any of us lapse sometimes from standards we uphold, it  is human."
