Fury over ten-year-old girl who died of asthma as coroner rules she was failed by ‘woeful’ NHS treatment
A GIRL of ten who sought medical help 48 times before dying of asthma was failed by “woeful” NHS treatment, a coroner has ruled.
Sophie Holman repeatedly visited GPs and was seen 18 times in A&E.
Yet each attack was dealt with separately instead of a long-term treatment plan being drawn up.
In December 2017 a GP sent her home with steroids.
The next day her parents were taking her to A&E when she collapsed, .
She was declared dead at Queen’s Hospital in Romford, East London.
Coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe told the Walthamstow hearing she had written to Health Secretary Matt Hancock and NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens demanding an overhaul of asthma care.
Dr Radcliffe blasted: “There were many missed opportunities to optimise and co-ordinate Sophie’s medical management during her 48 attendances and admissions in the [GP] practice and hospitals, particularly in her final year when she had four asthma attacks treated in the practice.”
She added: “This episode demonstrates a profound and woeful indication of the lack of understanding of how this condition should be managed by someone with proper training.”
