Beverston Castle is only partially habitable but has a seven-bed manor built into it

AN 800-year-old castle that looms above Prince Charles' Highgrove estate has gone on the market for £10m.

Beverston Castle, in Tetbury, Gloucs., is only partially habitable - but has a sprawling seven-bed manor built into it.

The Grade-I listed property comes with 694 acres of land and has been owned by the same family for over 70 years.

It was restored by late showjumper Major Laurence Rook and his wife Jane - but went on sale following her death last year aged 91.

The castle itself was built in 1225 - and the 17th century manor house comes with five estate cottages, an estate office, stables and walled kitchen garden.

The manor house was built using rubble from when the castle was badly damaged by Oliver Cromwell's Roundheads during the Civil War in 1644.

700 ACRES OF LAND

The estate is being offered for sale as a whole or in three lots, with the castle and 422 acres of land valued at £7.8m.

Richard Binning, of Savills, said: "It is the most amazing historic place - a 13th century castle attached to a 17th century manor.

"The property was lived in for some time by a family with a great interest in eventing with Badminton nearby.

"The estate boasts 635 acres and also some absolutely beautiful stone farm buildings.

"It is very rare for a property of this nature to come on to the market and there has been huge initial interest.

"A new owner could perhaps explore the possibility that it could be used commercially - for example it would make the most fabulous wedding venue."
