Holidaymakers could be taxed to return to Britain under Labour green plans

A frequent flyer levy would hit those taking more than one flight a year

HOLIDAYMAKERS could face being taxed to RETURN to Britain - under plans being discussed by Labour.

A Frequent Flyer Levy would hit travellers taking more than one trip every twelve months, an adviser has revealed.

The fee would increase for every trip taken by hard-pressed families and businessmen, a document reveals.

Plans for the money-raising scheme were outlined by Leo Murray who is an ally for the party’s shadow Treasury minister Clive Lewis.

He said: “The FFL framework would allow all passengers at UK airports one tax free flight per year, with a rising levy on each additional flight thereafter.”

Murray, who advises Lewis on the Transition to a Sustainable Economy, says the government should consider the plan by replacing the air passenger duty.

He says it could provide a “smart, fair and politically deliverable way” to maintain emissions within safe limits in the “coming decades”.

Shadow Transport Secretary Andy McDonald has said the idea is something the party would want to “consider”. He said the policy requires “careful examination” and it was on his “radar”.

Murray was the ringleader of the Trump baby blimp that was flown outside Parliament during the US President’s visit last year.

Tory MP Alan Mak last night said: “Our airport departure tax is already the highest in the world. This additional burden would be a tax on global Britain.

“It would be holding back our business people from promoting our goods and services overseas and hitting hard working families by putting up the cost of their holidays. It’s not smart or fair.”

On Saturday night, Mr Murray said: “The frequent flyer tax is designed to give the average holiday maker one tax free flight, therefore reducing the cost of flying for most Brits. It is the rich who fly excessively that this tax is aimed at.”

A Labour Party spokesman said: “This isn’t party policy.”

The Sun On Sunday Says

A FOREIGN holiday is a well-deserved break for many hard-working families.

So it beggars belief that Labour is considering slapping a new tax on Brits who diligently save up their cash so they can fly abroad more than once a year.

Under a frequent flyer levy, anyone will be penalised when they land back in Britain for the second time. The amount would rise for subsequent journeys.

Labour eco-zealots said the plans were aimed at the rich. But millions of ordinary families will find the cost of their holidays rising yet again.
