Driver who killed three women in head-on smash tried to eat dashcam memory card to destroy evidence

Kieran Dorsey, 24, was jailed for five and a half years for the horror crash in Basildon, Essex in July 2017

A DRIVER who killed three women in a horror smash and then tried to eat his dashcam memory card has today been jailed for five and a half years.

Kieran Dorsey, 24, ploughed his van head-on into a Fiat Punto in Basildon, Essex on July 3, 2017, killing all the passengers inside.

He had been driving over the speed limit on a 40mph road when the male passenger in his van told him to slow down, but Dorsey ignored him.

Philippa Izzard, 57, who was driving the Fiat coming the other way, was pronounced dead at the scene along with Amanda Stokoe, 60, who was sitting in the front passenger seat.

Sheila Izzard, the two women's mum, was also in the car at the time of the collision — she later died in hospital on August 29.

Dorsey and his passenger both suffered only minor injuries.

He fully accepts he removed the dashcam and bit through the SD card

After the crash, Dorsey chewed the SD memory card from his van's dashcam and hid the broken pieces in his sock.

The camera was found in a cubicle at Basildon Hospital where Dorsey was taken after the smash — but the card, which would have recorded anything on the camera, was already missing.

Prosecutor Stephen Rose said: "It's unclear to the court whether the dashcam recorded the speed, but it can be sure that the evidence has been lost as a result of the defendant's actions", reports.

Paul Raudnitz, Mitigating for Dorsey, said: "He fully accepts he removed the dashcam and bit through the SD card.

"He removed that item to ensure if it showed something, it would be destroyed."

Dorsey previously admitted at Basildon Crown Court killing three people by dangerous driving.

He also pleaded guilty to one count of perverting the course of justice.

Today Honour Judge Graham sentenced Dorsey to four and a half years for all three counts of causing death by dangerous driving and handed him a consecutive 12 months in prison for one count of perverting the course of justice.

Judge Graham said in court: "This case is a tragedy for everybody."
