What is a royal warrant and which famous companies hold one?

But what are royal warrants? And how do companies acquire them? Here's what you need to know.

What is a royal warrant?

Royal warrants of appointments are issued to companies that supply goods or services to the royals.

There are over 800 Royal Warrant holders, from individual shops to global organisations who have been given the royal stamp of approval.

Though over 600 Warrants were voided following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, meaning those businesses holding them will need to reapply.

To qualify, the business or individual must provide products or services to the grantor’s Royal Households for no less than five of the last seven years, as well as demonstrate an appropriate environmental and sustainability policy.

Warrants, once issued, last five years and are reviewed a year before the expiration date to decide whether they should be renewed or not for another five years.

Anywhere between 20 and 40 warrants are cancelled each year, with roughly the same number of new ones issued, meaning there are always about 875 Royal Warrants in any given year.

According to the Royal Warrant Holders Association’s website, the Royal Warrant becomes void once the grantor dies, but the Royal Arms on the products can be used for up to two years.

These brands don't give the royal family freebies and they do not have to be British companies.

Each warrant will usually contain the phrase: "By appointment to" and then the title and name of the royal customer and the goods provided.
