MCDONALD'S plastic straws are being listed on eBay for £1,000 - as furious customers rage over the "useless" new paper ones.

The fast food chain introduced paper straws amid concerns over plastic pollution in the oceans where items such as straws end up harming wildlife like turtles and fish.

But in an online backlash, angry customers have said they go soggy and change the taste of drinks.

A petition created by Martin Reed this week calling for the return of plastic straws has attracted than 35,000 signatures.

Now people have started to list the plastic straws on eBay - for four figure sums.

One seller joked: "Brilliant brand new McDonald's straw...this is soon to become the stuff of legend.

"Imagine you're about 50 years older than you are now, telling your grandchildren how you got given plastic straws from McDonald's. They will look up to you like a God!"

In response McDonald's said: "Our suppliers have made us paper straws that last at least 30 minutes in most, if not all liquids.

"They were introduced following customer feedback, and we are pleased to be doing the right thing in removing plastic from our restaurants and taking significant steps to reduce our environmental impact."
