The children were cycling near the halting site where they lived in the Creggane area of Galway when the tragedy happened.

They were rushed to Portiuncula Hospital but sadly Bridget was pronounced dead on arrival.

The family were keeping a bedside vigil for Patrick yesterday, although his injuries were described as non-life threatening.

Friends of the family took to social media yesterday to pay tribute to “little Princess” Bridget and wish Patrick a speedy recovery.

One pal wrote on Facebook: “RIP Bridget... My heart is breaking for your family. Look over your mommy, daddy and brothers and sisters at this sad time.”

Another said: “So sorry for their loss, RIP little princess. “It’s heartbreaking, a beautiful little girl, may God give them the strength to cope with their loss.”

Local Fine Gael councillor Michael Finnerty said the local community will rally around the family in the coming days to support them.

He said: “For this to happen on any day is bad enough but on Easter Sunday for this family is tragic and we are thinking of them.

“They have a large family and I’m sure the community will rally around them over the coming days.”

Former Communications Minister Denis Naughten also described his shock at the accident.

The Roscommon Galway TD wrote on Facebook: “What a terrible tragedy on Easter Sunday. Our thoughts and prayers are with those involved and their families.”

Eglish Primary School in Ahascragh, Co Galway, paid tribute in a moving Facebook post. They said: “Our school community is deeply saddened by the news of the tragic death today of our student, classmate and friend, Bridget.”
