Easter weekend traffic – Travel chaos as tailbacks on M25 and around Dover leave thousands of Brit holidaymakers stuck on roads
BRITAIN'S transport networks were plunged into chaos today as thousands took to the roads to get away over Easter.
Long tailbacks on the M25 and around Dover meant many faced horrific delays on Good Friday.
There were disruptions across rail and ferry services too after warnings were issued because of the Extinction Rebellion protests in London.
And at around 2pm this afternoon, clockwise traffic on the M25 was at a complete gridlocked standstill.
Firefighters battled to put out billowing flames after a burger van caught fire.
Highways England also warned drivers in the south west to "delay their travel plans" due to lengthy tailbacks on the M5, A303, A30 and A38.
A serious crash on the A417 even had to have an air ambulance called out for it, causing the road to remain closed.
Britain's train network also saw problems, with a reduced service to and from London Victoria in effect today and tomorrow.
And South Western Railway is running an amended timetable throughout the bank holiday weekend.
Passengers hoping to use trains are advised to check timetables before they travel.
In Dover, holidaymakers were snarled up in delays today as heavy traffic ground through the port to Calais.
Queues at French passport control caused hold-ups for families trying to make their booked ferries.
Those heading to the port are now being advised to allow double the normal amount of time to get through the checks.
And despite Extinction Rebellion's attempts to bring Heathrow to a standstill being thwarted, strikes caused delays to Portugal and Spain this Easter weekend.
Both Ryanair and EasyJet routes were affected by the industrial action.
Good Friday is usually one of the busiest travel days of the whole year with around 4.4million journeys triggering traffic problems, according to the RAC.
