The FBI Denver Division and Jefferson County Sheriff's Office had warned the public not to approach Pais as she was "dangerous".
'IT'S A CREDIBLE THREAT' Mike Taplin, a spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, said the threats were not directed to a specific school.
Jenny Fulton, a spokeswoman with the sheriff's office, said: "It's a credible threat, but she did not make it directly."
As a result of the threats, Columbine High School and nearly 20 other schools were put on lockdown.
School officials said the doors were locked but classes continued.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said deputies were at the schools involved.
A lockdown is a response to a threat directly to the school or in the surrounding community - no one is allowed to enter or leave the buildings on campus.
SCHOOLS ON LOCKDOWN Diana Wilson, a Jefferson County Schools spokeswoman, said: "Everyone is safe. We will have extra safety and security staff on site at all schools affected.
"All after-school activities, sports, and practices will occur as scheduled EXCEPT for Columbine High School where all such activities are cancelled."
