THERESA May faced a hammer blow last night as public sympathy for her collapsed.
The embattled PM has been propped up by voter admiration for her dogged determination to deliver Brexit.
But private polls reveal it began ebbing away after she failed to lead Britain out of the EU on time.
Tory chiefs are alarmed at how quickly voters have lost patience with her.
Last night she was dealt a further blow when a poll gave Labour a seven-point lead — her party’s worst showing in five years.
A senior source said: “Theresa has been clinging on for some time to the knowledge the public admire her hard work, resilience and sense of public duty.

“But it is clear the tide turned swiftly after March 29 went without Britain leaving the EU, despite her saying 108 times we would.”
The public mood hardened after the double humiliation of her missing the Brexit departure date and pleading with Jeremy Corbyn to help break the deadlock.
Two weeks ago the Tories were neck and neck with Labour, but they have dropped six points, giving Labour a seven-point lead, according to an Opinium poll.
It would be enough to make Labour the biggest party with 307 seats — 19 short of an overall majority.
Mrs May has turned off Remain voters but has now alienated Leavers — with more than a fifth saying they will now vote for Ukip.
Tory chairmen and activists are compiling a letter calling on the PM to stand down sooner than later.
Their frustration was laid bare in a message to a party WhatsApp group obtained by The Sun on Sunday.
Hammond warns Theresa May could cling to power

PHILIP Hammond has warned Theresa May could cling to power until the end of October.
The Chancellor dashed talk of her early exit telling an interviewer “she doesn’t have any intention of leaving” until Brexit is delivered.
But some fear that could be years.
One chairman said: “Unless something happens to remove May soon, I’ll be considering my membership.”
Former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith said: “The PM has already said that she is stepping down.
“She needs to heed these concerns and those of her MPs and not let it drag out.”
