Gruesome picture shows man’s ‘sagging’ IRIS after he was hit in the face by bungee cord
The man from Taiwan was left reeling in utter agony and with blurred and double vision after the excruciating accident
THESE shocking pictures show a man’s collapsed IRIS after he was struck in his left eye by a bungee cord.
The 48-year-old had been trying to secure goods onto his motorbike when the elastic cordage came loose and whipped him in the eyeball.
Straight away the man was left in agonising pain but for the next week, along with the agony, he suffered double vision and blurriness.
Eye doctors found the unnamed man's iris was badly deformed, with the “upper portion sagging downward”.
The diagnosis was traumatic iridodialysis.
This occurs when the iris comes away from the ciliary body — which produces the fluid that keeps the eye lubricated and allows the lens to change shape when focusing.
The man was treated at the National Taiwan University Hospital.
Fortunately a remarkable medical procedure was carried out called iridoplasty. This led to full recovery.
This involves shining laser beams into the iris so it contracts and helps to open drainage channels.
Dr Chia-Chieh Hsiao published his experience with this bizarre case in the .
He said the patient's distorted iris was found the “upper portion sagging downward, detached from the 9 o'clock position to the 3 o'clock position”.

Dr Nicholas Bell — a clinical professor at the University of Texas who was not involved in the case — told the condition is “relatively uncommon”.
He said: “Bungee cord and airbag injuries seem to more frequently result in traumatic iridodialysis because of the focally concentrated strong force.”
