A SERIAL slasher feared to have carried out five gruesome stabbings in Edmonton could still be on the loose - with terrified locals warned to be on their guard.

A man is fighting for life after being stabbed at around 5am today in Fairfield Road - less than a mile from where four other victims were knifed over the weekend.

Cops have so far arrested three people but are being cautious until it is confirmed whether the suspects are behind the attacks.

They also said they are keeping an "open mind" over if the attack today is linked to the four other stabbings as they continue to quiz a man, aged in his 30s, in custody.

Cops have described the arrest as “significant” as the latest victim was left fighting for his life.

The arrested suspect, in his 30s, was in custody last night on suspicion of attempted murder.

Two other men were arrested in connection with the spate of brutal attacks this weekend.

A man arrested on Sunday for suspected GBH was released. Police were also still quizzing a third man, aged in his 40s.

Police also confirmed afternoon they are "potentially only looking for one individual perpetrator" but couldn't say if the suspect arrested is the crazed knifeman.

North Area BCU Commander Helen Millichap said: "Until these investigations have developed further and we are in a position to speak with certainty about this, I have a duty to ask the public to remain vigilant.

EXTRA PATROLS

"We continue to advise the public to remain alert and must continue to follow all possible points of enquiry into these incidents."

She also said there would be extra patrols in the area "around the clock" while the investigation continues.

But she added: "We are not asking people to stay inside, we are not locking down anywhere, people deserve answers about this investigation.

"We are taking an open-minded approach to these incidents.

“I am aware that these events have caused a huge amount of worry and concern among the community.
“I want to reassure you that we are doing everything we can to keep the public safe.”

LOCALS LEFT TERRIFIED

Video taken outside Lidl in Edmonton Green appears to show the suspect being arrested today.

Today's victim - also aged in his 30s - was walking with a pal in when he was slashed. He stumbled just yards from a police cordon on Aberdeen Road where he was rushed to a major trauma centre..

Police have admitted the location and how the knifing was carried out was similar to the other attacks.

It came after knife crime continues to plague the UK - with a man aged in his 20s murdered in nearby Kentish Town last night.

Terrified locals in Edmonton are now refusing to walk alone at night with some even considering moving.

Schools have also beefed up security in the wake of the brutal stabbings, which saw four people attacked in 14 hours over the weekend.

'IT'S VERY SCARY'

Resident Dayle Best, 54, said: “The guy collapsed outside my front door. There’s been a 24-hour police watch in my street from Saturday’s stabbing. It’s terrifying living here.”
Hours later, at 10am, cops tackled a suspect and handcuffed him near Edmonton Green rail station.

A Lidl security guard told how cops recovered a blade.

He said: “I saw about six officers chasing this black man and they caught him right outside the doors. I’m sure I saw them put a knife into an evidence bag.”

Kelvin Ojo, 36, said: "It's scary now, this is not normal. They can't find this person, it's just one guy.

"It's been peaceful for a while until all this drama started coming up. Now I'm starting thinking about moving from this area, I'm not liking it.

"It could happen to anyone - my friends, my family, it could happen to me. It's really scary.

"We don't even know this guy they are talking about, so it's really scary."

I usually have my headphones on but I want to stay aware and try not to be a victim

Edmonton local Mike Kalongi

Mike Kalongi, 28, who lives near the scene of the stabbing, said: "It's a bit scary. I usually go to the gym at night, but over the last few days I decided not to.

"I'm going shopping. I usually have my headphones on but I want to stay aware and try not to be a victim.

"It's scary. It's really scary."

Shopkeeper Gonul Kizilkaya told Sun Online he was scared of leaving his shop over fears the slasher has struck again.

I walk down the street and worry that everyone I pass could be the guy

Terrified local Melek Kucuk

He said: "These random attacks are really scary. I’m not coming out of my shop. I’m trying to stay inside.

"You can’t read people when you walk past them...you don’t know what they’re thinking.

"I am frightened to go out. There are too many stabbings. These random attacks are just so scary."

Gabriel Codre is now considering moving elsewhere after the attacks.

The 21-year-old said: "We walk around in fear now. We worry that someone will come behind and kill us or stab us.

"It’s more violent than I thought it would be when I came here. I want to move to another area. I fear for my family. I want them to be safe."

While Melek Kucuk, 39, said: "It’s very frightening.

"It’s unbelievable what’s happening. I walk down the street and worry that everyone I pass could be the guy.

"It’s very, very scary. I don’t walk around, I only drive. I will take my daughter to school now, rather than let her take the bus. London is not safe anymore."

SCHOOLS ON LOCKDOWN

Schools have also banned kids from leaving during their break time as a safety measure - with one going into "lockdown", reports.

Maureen Cobbett, head teacher of the Latymer School, told parents in an email: "For precautionary purposes students are not allowed to leave the school premises during break-time and lunchtime until further notice . . . Students should bring their own food to eat; they will not be able to order food or leave the building to purchase food.”

She also warned parents that children should walk to and from school in pairs or groups and "stick to main roads".

The email added: "Students are advised not to listen to music or be distracted by their smartphones when walking.”

The Nightingale Academy also said that lockdown procedures were in place.

CHILLING WARNING

Police yesterday issued a chilling warning to those living in the area asking them to remain vigilant when walking alone.

A section 60 order giving officers stop and search powers was also issued yesterday in Edmonton until 1.50am this morning.

The four victims knifed in a 14-hour period at the weekend were all "vulnerable" when they were ambushed from behind.

Cops believe a lone attacker was behind the bloodshed - the latest in a series of brutal stabbings amid Britain's ongoing knife crime crisis.

The knifeman first struck at 7pm on Saturday night when he stabbed a 45-year-old woman in the back. She is currently fighting for her life.

The second victim, a 52-year-old man, was attacked just after midnight and is in a non-life threatening condition in hospital.

Just before 4am on Sunday, a 23-year-old man was knifed in Edmonton and found three miles away at Seven Sisters Tube station.

Five stabbings in four days

7.02pm GMT Saturday: A 45-year-old woman was stabbed in the back in Aberdeen Road, Edmonton, after being attacked by the man and remains in a critical condition in an East London hospital

12.15am Sunday: A man was stabbed in Park Avenue - a 10-minute walk away from the first incident - and is currently in a non-life threatening condition

3.55am BST Sunday: A 23-year-old man was stabbed in Silver Street and found three miles away outside Seven Sisters Tube station. He is in a critical condition in hospital

9.43am Sunday: A man was stabbed in the back in Brettenham Road and has suffered potentially life-threatening injuries

5.05am today: A man, in his 30s, is knifed in Fairfield Road - suffering life-threatening injuries

'WHY ME?'

He is no longer in a life threatening condition.

Horrified witnesses have told how they heard a chilling scream on Brettenham Road about 9.40am on Sunday when one victim was knifed.

Plumber Roger Blackman, 46, who was visiting his mum on Mother's Day, told the Sun Online: "I was getting tools from the back of my van and I heard a scream on an area of grass to the right of my Mum’s house. That’s where he got stabbed.

"I saw somebody crouched down who then ran off back into the estate on Folkestone Road.

"As I walked to the area I heard another scream and then the victim came out holding his back.

"He was saying ‘why has this happened to me? Oh my god, help me’."

He said he at first thought the victim had been punched of hit as he stumbled across the road, screaming.

The plumber added: "I saw blood pouring out his back onto the ground."

BLOODSHED RAGES ON

Edmonton borders Tottenham and Ponders End with Spurs' former ground White Hart Lane less than a mile away.

It is at the centre of a huge £1.5billion  redevelopment project - with up to 5,000 new homes and 3,000 new jobs being created - to add to the shops and cafes on the bustling high street.

The area is home to a number of a Grade II listed buildings - including Charles Lamb Institute, which is now used as a church, and the Edmonton Central Library.

The bloodshed comes as knife crime continues to rage on in the UK - with PM Theresa May yesterday launching a blitz on the "disease".

Another night of violence in Britain yesterday saw a man aged in his 20s stabbed to death in Kentish Town, North London - making him the 33rd murder victim this year.

It happened within four hours of two other vicious assaults in Essex and Wokingham, which left two men seriously injured.

Deadly haul in playground

Exclusive by James Mills

FORENSICS cops discovered a blades stash at a kids’ playground near a fatal stabbing scene.

Four kitchen knives and a skewering fork were found in a bush yards from swings yesterday.

Calvin Bungisa, 22, was killed there on Monday night. He was stabbed in the head by four attackers in Kentish Town, North London — and pals believe he was targeted in a twisted point-scoring game among rival gangs.

It was not known if they used any of the knives found.

Meanwhile, a bobby found an abandoned Samurai sword in Woolwich, South East London.
