Mourners hear mum-of-three who died in horror hospital fall ‘had a heart of gold’ as she’s buried with newborn son in Ireland
Hundreds packed into the small church in Ballyagran in Ireland today to pay their last respects to the 36-year-old
A MUM-OF-THREE who died after falling from her hospital bed in a maternity hospital last Monday has today been buried with her newborn son who also died in the tragic accident.
Hundreds packed into the small Parish Church in Ballyagran, County Limerick in Ireland today to pay their last respects to 36-year-old Marie Downey, who was born and raised in the area.
Marie gave birth to her third son on Friday night March 22 in Cork University Hospital.
The following Monday, she was breastfeeding newborn Darragh in a private room when it is understood she suffered an epileptic fit and fell out of the bed.
Marie was found by doctors doing their rounds who immediately tried to revive her, but she couldn’t be saved.
Darragh was found underneath Marie in her hospital room and he was rushed to intensive care.
But he too passed away the following day.
Brave husband Kieran paid tribute to his wife today, describing her as a beautiful person inside and out.
He said: “She had a heart of gold. She always put us first.
“Herself and Darragh are our special angels now.
“Our first dance at our wedding was to ‘We Have Only Just Begun’ — and we had only just begun.
“We love you, Darragh and Marie.”
Among the symbolic gifts brought to the altar of St Michael’s Church was a framed picture of the couple’s two older boys, James and Seán, meeting their new brother Darragh.
And brave James brought teddy bears which symbolised the bond between the three brothers and their mum’s love and devotion to her boys.
Marie and Darragh were buried together with her arms wrapped around her infant son following Requiem Mass in Castletown Cemetery.
