Italy considers chemical castration for rapists among tough new laws for sex offenders

The populist League party wants chemical castration for some sex offenders after a spate of sickening attacks in the country

ITALY is considering chemical castration for rapists after an American teenager was allegedly gang-raped by three men in Sicily.

The measure is part of a major new bill aimed at tacking sex crimes after a spate of crimes that have shocked the country.

Three men allegedly sexually abused and raped the American tourist woman while filming the attack.

Arrests were made when police identified and arrested them after one of the men sent the victim a video via social media.

Interior Minister Matteo Salvini tweeted: "No leniency for the molesting worms who raped a tourist.

"Guaranteed jail time and chemical castration!"

The idea of chemical castration for some sex offenders  — with their consent as an alternative to a long jail sentence — was put forward by the right-wing League.

But the party's coalition partners Five Star were opposed it.

Five Star MP Veronica Giannone dismissed the idea.

She said: 'It's a joke to say ‘we'll castrate you, but only if you agree’.

“Chemical castration isn't the method, but prison and certainty of punishment.

“This proposal is just political propaganda, and dozens of my colleagues think so too.”

Meanwhile, revenge porn is being made a crime — but there is still debate over the exact details of that proposal.

Five Star MP, Giulia Sarti, a victim of revenge porn herself, was supported by the mum of Tiziana Cantone, 31, who took her own life in 2017 after sex videos of her went viral.

She said: “As you are an MP, perhaps what happened can serve as input to legislate and finally intervene against this phenomenon.”
