What caused the Halifax lorry crash, what are the current delays and when will roads re-open?
An eyewitness suggested the driver may have taken the heroic action of swerving to save others when his brakes failed
A REFUSE lorry smashed into a house before flipping over in Halifax this morning.
But what caused the crash and when will roads be re-opening? Here's everything you need to know.
What happened?
Just before 6am this morning, a lorry hit a house on Stump Cross in Halifax, West Yorks.
The vehicle overturned in the crash leaving rubbish strewn all over the road.
Suez Recycling and Recovery UK, which owns the lorry involved in the incident, said the driver suffered minor injuries in the crash, the reports.
The spokesperson for the firm added that the cause of the accident is still unknown but an investigation will be launched in due course.
One eyewitness, Martin Tighe, 39, ran to help the driver as he was trapped in the cab.
Martin told : "The first thing he said was 'my brakes, my brakes'. There were three to four hundred litres of diesel pouring out, but me and another guy, he'd smashed a window, and the driver was trapped inside.
"We got his seat belt off and helped him out."
Martin suggested the driver may have made the heroic decision to avoid oncoming traffic and put himself in danger after his brakes failed.
He added: "As he's coming down, he had two options, go round the corner where there was traffic and cars at the lights, or go over the crash barrier.
"He must have been doing around 60 miles an hour and if he'd gone through [the cars] he would have obliterated them.
"Through his actions, 100 per cent he saved lives by not going into the back of those four or five cars."
Which roads are closed?
The scene is taking a long time to clear and Calderdale Council previously said that the condition of the road will need to be assessed once the lorry has been moved.
Leeds Road, The Hough and Kell Lane were all closed earlier today and may continue to stay shut while the clean-up is going on.
Bradford Road was also closed in both directions near Stump Cross where the crash took place.
Local reports also suggested that traffic from Bradford Road from the Shelf can get to Leeds Road, but can't get all the way in to Halifax.
What is happening now?
Authorities are on the scene working hard to get the site cleaned up and reopened for traffic.
