Brexit looks like it is doomed to fail and Conservative chaos must take blame
Brexit killers
IF Brexit dies, as seems increasingly possible, it will have the unlikeliest of assassins — some of those who most wanted it and stand to lose most from its demise.
MPs have twice been given the chance to vote for an exit deal which would secure much of what 17.4million voted for and return some stability to Britain.
Twice they have rejected it.
In the diehard Remainers’ case that’s because they will not support any Brexit or honour their promises to voters.
In Labour’s case it’s solely because they hope to profit from the chaos.
In the peculiar case of the Tory ERG and the DUP, two groups who could not be more pro-Brexit, it’s because the deal contains the controversial “backstop” they fear could one day trap us.
So next week, barring a dramatic U-turn, they will all seal its doom.
The backbench Tories still furiously opposed include Boris Johnson and Dominic Raab, two potential Prime Ministers who have not grasped that what they see as heroic, principled resistance is likely to be fatal to their hopes of being picked as leader.
Meanwhile the DUP also appear to be not for turning.
What do they all think happens then?
The EU buckles? There’s a harder Brexit? Or No Deal? We cannot see it.
Parliament’s Remainer majority will stitch up the softest possible Brexit, with Labour support.
The EU has given them the time. Their pet Speaker Bercow will hand them the tools.
And who knows? If No Deal is ever the only other option left, panicked Remainers may well simply cancel Brexit.
If Theresa May’s deal is a failure, the ERG and DUP’s blinkered stubbornness is a greater one.
Because the destruction or negation of Brexit may destroy the Tory Party, and the DUP’s role in power.
Leave voters will be hoovered up by Nigel Farage, reborn as leader of the Brexit Party.
The current PM may not have long left in Downing Street. After that, who would bet against an election?
Or put much money on the Tories to win it?
Since 2016 they have had one job: to deliver Brexit.
Yet — for all their excuses, some of them justified — it is on the brink of collapse.
Raab and Johnson have great talent. Either could make a leader or PM.
Either could be the man to revive the Tories and save Britain from a terrifying Venezuelan fate under Corbyn.
Neither are going to get the chance if they bury Brexit by defeating the deal.
There may even be no party left to lead.
Slump chumps
THE Eurozone’s economy is on its knees.
France is close to recession. So is Germany.
Its manufacturers are in their biggest slump in six years.
But Britain has record employment, low inflation, surging pay and respectable growth.
How insane, then, for Remainers to vote to shackle our fortunes to the failing EU.
